There are many different brands of kayaks available from which to choose; there are varying degrees of length in kayaks, kayaks that you sit within and ones that you sit upon, and there are kayaks of different widths. Once you have the right equipment to get started, and have taken enough lessons to feel confident on the water, the next step will be to learn about the environment in which you will be fishing. What type of fish will be your target? What type of pole and tackle will you need in order to bring in those fish? What is the weather? How about the water temperature and activity?

Several reasons can be attributed to the growing popularity of kayak fishing. You can increase your fishing area while in a kayak, since you are able to paddle to areas that may have been inaccessible by shore. Many fish prefer woody and vegetated shore lines, as that is where they capture the lion's share of their prey. Sitting in a kayak allows the angler the opportunity to cast out to those treasure troves of fish habitats without the fish hearing or seeing the danger.

The silent paddling of the angler in the kayak also offers an advantage. Fish are acute in hearing and motion sensors, and become suspicious when a motored boat trolls through. No motor is necessary with the kayak, and practice will perfect a splash free paddling technique, allowing the angler to glide through the water virtually undetectable to the unsuspecting fish below.
