Buying Kayak Paddles
Among the several surface water sports, kayaking involves the use of relatively less and simple form of equipments. With just a kayak and a paddle, a kayaker can venture out on the waterways for a nice session. However, there are numerous types of kayaks and paddles and novices can often get confused while buying the right type equipment suitable for them.
Often kayakers research a lot while buying a kayak but neglect the paddle and settle for the paddle that comes with the kayak. A kayak paddle is as important as the kayak itself and paddlers must bear in mind some important points while buying a kayak paddle.
Guidelines for Buying a Kayak Paddle
While buying a kayak paddle, beginners must especially follow certain tips in order to make the right purchase. Some of the tips are as follows:
1. The most important tip for buying a kayak paddle is to first test it. It is possible that kayakers may not feel comfortable while handling the paddle initially. It would require the kayaker to get used to a particular paddle. Testing it before would give the kayaker the much required feel and the perfect idea of the performance of the paddle.
2. The feathered paddles are the most widely used paddles but can cause great strain on the wrist and forearm. These paddles usually have an offset of 45 to 90 degrees. Thus, to reduce this strain and avoid any hazards of carpal tunnel syndrome, it is good to buy a paddle which has an offset of less than 90 degrees or unfeathered paddles.
3. For those who plan to venture on a long flatwater kayaking tour, buying an Inuit style paddle can be a very good option. The Inuit paddles are unfeathered and are perfectly suited for strong wind conditions.
4. For recreational or touring kayaking, a good option is to buy a paddle that is light in weight and comfortable. Kayakers must check the size and shape of the kayak and are recommended to buy oval shaped paddles.
5. The size of paddle depends upon the form of kayaking that the paddler intends to take up. For whitewater kayaking, paddlers must buy paddles with a length of 188-203cms while for recreational or touring kayaking the length must range between 210-240cms. For inflatable kayaks, the paddle length should be between 220-240cms.
6. Before buying a paddle, paddlers must try using both the feathered and in-line types of paddles and choose whichever is comfortable. Once this choice is made, paddlers must continue to use the same type of paddle and not switch between these paddle types.
7. For easy storage, buying a break down paddle is a good option. These paddles break down into two parts and can be stowed away easily.
8. Kayakers who have wider kayaks can opt for longer paddles while smaller paddles are suitable for small kayaks. Small paddles offer great turning and maneuverability features.
