Buying used outboard engines can be quite a daunting process if you don't know what to look out for. Inspect the motor carefully and obviously expect that they'll be some superficial scratches and scrapes, but if there are signs of immediate impact, then don't buy it no matter how cheap it is.
The propeller is a vulnerable part of the motor that come into direct contact with underwater obstacles such as rocks and old submerged supermarket trolleys. Check this carefully from every angle as it should be smooth without dings and dents.
Below the propeller is a pointed part called the skeg. If the skeg or propeller are damaged or bent, there could be some more serious damage to other internal parts.
Always remove the cover of used outboard engines and have a good look at the parts underneath. As you would under a car bonnet, looks for signs of oil, fuel or water leaks which may indicate damaged gaskets or seals. All electrical connections should be in good condition and tight.
Ask to see the motor running. A two stroke engine will give off some smoke but this should stop when it has warmed up. If the fumes carry on, there could either be problems or too much oil could have been added to the fuel. Smoke from a warmed up four stroke engine is much more serious as it should burn fuel more cleanly. Check the oil from the four stroke engine (there will be a dip stick showing the oil level). If it looks milky or there is evidence of water, there will be problems that will need professional attention.
If the motor starts quickly then it is worth considering.
Check the spark plugs by removing them and looking for excessive deposits which could show signs that repairs or adjustments are necessary.
If you are unsure or unconfident, get all used outboard engines that you are interested in buying, checked out by an engineer.
Need to decide on which outboard motor (2 or 4 stroke?) to buy? Want tips on buying and getting the best value for your money? Head over to the site along with the rest of the population who are also looking for used outboard engines.

Dingy Skipper $86.03 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Dingy Skipper Erynnis tages is a butterfly of the Hesperiidae family. This well camouflaged, brown and grey butterfly can be confused with the Grizzled Skipper, the Mother Shipton Moth or the Burnet Companion Moth. It is probably the most moth like British Butterfly and normally rests with its wings in a moth like fashion. It is widely but patchily distributed across Britain. It occurs further north than any other Skipper in Scotland with some isolated colonies in the Inverness region. It is also the only Skipper to be found in Ireland, again with a patchy distribution but the main strongholds along the western side. A variety of habitats are used including Chalk downland, Woodland clearings, coastal dunes, railway lines and even waste ground. It is widespread in Europe, east to Asia and China, though it is on the decline in several European countries including the UK. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F.
