There are several kayaking destinations worldwide that attract hordes of kayakers every day. However, there are some locations that are considered as havens for Watersports like kayaking, windsurfing, whitewater rafting and sailing. One such location that is considered as a paradise for kayakers is the American state of Virginia. The state boasts of some of the best whitewater and flatwater kayaking locations in the world.

Virginia - A Kayaking Hotspot

The greatest advantage of Virginia is that it provides equally good locations for lake, river and sea kayaking. Thus, once in Virginia, enthusiasts can never be too far away from a good kayaking location. Some of the most popular kayaking locations in Virginia include:

Chesapeake Bay: The Chesapeake Bay is a favourite ocean kayak location during summers as well as winters. The best route to follow here would be to start from the Whites creek to Milford Haven and then touch the Chesapeake Bay. Apart from being a great sea kayaking location, the Chesapeake Bay also has some great fishing stretches.

Abel Reservoir: The Abel reservoir is a great flatwater kayaking location with a great stretch of 2 miles from the starting point to the dam. Also, the Abel reservoir has great waterways and weeds that offer perfect kayak fishing conditions. The Abel reservoir is also popular among kayakers for the amazing wildlife that it offers. Paddlers can watch colourful fishes, various species of birds, turtles and even beavers while kayaking in the reservoir.

Cat Point Creek: The Cat Point Creek is a good river kayaking option. The starting point is located off the Rappahannock River. The route passes through Tayloe section of the Rappahannock River National Wildlife Refuge, Julian's Point up to Menokin Bay.

Accotink Reservoir: The Accotink Reservoir is yet another small but beautiful flatwater kayaking option in Virginia. It is a well wooded lake and there are plenty of activities happening on the shore. Thus, paddlers can participate in these activities after their kayaking session. The Accotink reservoir is a great option for recreational paddlers too.

Maury River: The Maury River is small but has thrilling rapids and is thus very popular among whitewater kayaking enthusiasts. The only period when paddlers can kayak on the Maury River is from April to June. Yet another feature of kayaking on the Maury is the beautiful landscape that adorns the path of the river with the river cliffs adding to the excitement of kayaking.

Also, this is a great place for kayak fishing, especially for those who would like to try their luck for the small mouth bass fishing.

Sandy River Reservoir: The Sandy River Reservoir is a great lake kayaking option, especially during the autumn when the fall colours totally transform the lake. The 750-acre lake is perfect for beginners and recreational kayakers.

Queen's Creek: A great river kayaking location, kayakers generally begin from the New Quarter Park across Camp Perry. The best part of kayaking on Queen's Park is the amazing wildlife of the region that makes the Queen's Creek very popular among the kayakers.
