As the sport of Whitewater Kayaking has been growing exponentially over the years, the kayaks themselves have also changed tremendously with the times. Using today's engineering and computers, we are now able to design boats that will keep us safer and have a more enjoyable run on the river. There are now 4 types of Whitewater Kayaks - Freestyle, River Running, Free Running and Creeking

Freestyle kayaks are the smallest boats in the whitewater family of boats. The tight design contains less volume, and allows the paddler to carve, spin, cartwheel, and loop in variety of water conditions and features. The cockpit is centered and the boat has flat hulls, which allows the paddler greater maneuverability. These types of boats are the hardest to learn in and require the most skill to utilize their potential.

The Free Running kayak is essentially a hybrid of the freestyle and river runner kayak. These boats offer the comfort of the river runner with the maneuverability of the freestyle kayak, giving you a very stable but responsive boat. This is a good boat for beginners as you can learn the basics of rolling and bracing while also enjoying some relaxing down river paddling. If you want to run the river but also like to play with your friends on the way down, this style of kayak is for you. Many people decide on a hybrid boat for economic reasons. With the purchase of this type of kayak you no longer need two boats.

River running kayaks are the original whitewater boats put out by Prijon in 1982. I think the Taifun was the first boat put out. The length and volume of these whitewater kayaks make them extremely fast and stable, and their planning hulls allow them to bite into the current and stay on track through powerful eddy lines. The design of the river running boat has progressed over the years into a much shorter design. Now a days most river runners are under 10ft in length.

Last but not least are Creekboats. They are the normally largest style of whitewater boat today and have a similar volume distribution for huge boat capability. They are designed with high buoyancy in the bow and stern rockers to help the kayak slide over any obstacles with ease, and its rounded hull allows for soft landings off big drops. They have great edges to carve those tight back creek runs.
