Explore The Cities And Towns Of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is well known as one of the world's best beach holiday destinations – and why not? The island is surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful golden beaches and the warm seas of the Indian Ocean. However, step away from the sun lounger and venture into the cities and towns of this vibrant country and experience something just as rewarding and a great addition to your beach holiday.
Sri Lanka's capital Colombo is on the west coast of the island and is the country's largest city. It's a major port for the country and a great place to experience the many different cultures that make up Sri Lanka. The urban landscape is very different to the rest of the country, which is essentially a very rural place. It's not to everyone's tastes, but there is a lot to keep you entertained, including casinos, nightclubs, shopping centres, theatres, cinemas and more. Colombo is famed for its cultural heritage, fine dining and shopping, but if you can't keep off the beach you can always visit the nearby Mt Lavinia.
Along the west coast and about 25 miles north of Colombo is the pretty fishing town of Negombo. Located close the country's international airport it is often the first stop for visitors to Sri Lanka. Many famous images of Sri Lanka will have the creamy brown sails of the oruwa canoes of Negombo as they return home with the day's catch. By visiting Negombo you can see this picturesque scene for yourself and visit Sri Lanka's largest fish market. The town has a strong Catholic influence and there are many spires and churches dotted around the town. It is also a historically important place in Sri Lanka's history has passed into Dutch, Portuguese and British hands throughout the years.
Head east to the foothills of the central highlands and you'll find Sri Lanka's second city, Kandy. Situated around a picturesque lake, Kandy is well known as Sri Lanka's cultural centre. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Kandy is steeped in history and culture. The city's setting and vibe is very different from the bustling coastal towns and it is surrounded by lush countryside and beautiful hills. There's a lot to keep you entertained in Kandy, including a nice mix of old shops, a vibrant market, temples and colourful cultural shows. Kandy has a very relaxed atmosphere and gets very quiet during the nights, which is a perfect environment to let the stresses of life drain away.
Holidays to Sri Lanka aren't just about sitting on a beach or by a swimming pool. This country is steeped in culture and history and it can be so rewarding if you take some time to explore this gem of the Indian Ocean.
