Buying A Kayak : Points You Should Consider

This article looks at the key points that you need to think about before you can buy that new canoe or kayak.

1)    What kayaking will you be doing ?

The first thing you need to be thinking about is where you are going to use your kayak and what kind of paddling are you going to be doing.  

Maybe you want to use it for a whole day out or maybe you would like to go further and tour in your boat.

Touring kayaks are fast, efficient and comfortable, allowing you to travel longer distances with ease.  This type is usually larger than many others and will generally have plenty of storage space.  They are available as single seaters or tandems and are also referred to as ocean kayaks.

Want to do some fishing ? Many kayaks are designed specifically with fishing in mind.  Features of this type are  - good storage space, easy to use, comfortable, very stable (especially when your actually fishing).  An angling kayak is the ideal solution for getting into shallow or tricky areas of water without startling the fish.  This type often has  rod holders, anchor cleats, extra rigging, bait buckets, a GPS or fish finder mount and a tackle compartment, and come as one or two seaters.

If you want to tackle the faster flowing rivers or even the river rapids then you are going to need a whitewater kayak.These tend to be very maneuverable, they are small, light and very fast.  Due to the handling characteristics of these boats, they are not really suitable for a beginner or novice paddler.

Sit on top Kayaks are a popular choice for many, they are fun, easy to use and are extremely safe.  Because you sit on it rather than sit in it, there is no chance of becoming stuck if you should happen to capsize.  This means that a sit on top is an ideal choice for use by children and complete beginners.

Many kayaks are covered by the term – recreational.  These craft try and do a little of everything (a jack of all trades), some are better than others but as a whole this category is very popular as you get a boat with a lot of versatility at a variety of prices.

2)    What is your level of paddling experience ?

Total novices are not going to be able to get to grips with a craft that is tricky to handle at first but comes into it's own in more extreme conditions, conversely, there is no point for someone who is competent going for an easy handling, gentle boat, as your abilities would be beyond that of the boat.  So it is important that you consider the experience and capability levels of yourself and others that may use the craft, and try and strike a balance and match the handling and performance to your skill levels.

A new paddler or one with only a little experience will be far happier with a boat that has a good initial stability.  This means that when stationary or travelling at low speed, the boat will feel very safe and stable.   A more experienced paddler will have no problem with a poor initial stability, but will relish the feeling of having a good final stability.  This is the boats natural resistance to tipping once the boat has been leaned to a point beyond it's initial stability.

Another factor to consider based on the level of experience of the paddler is the size or tightness of the cockpit.  A confident experienced paddler will like a tighter fitting cockpit where they can use their legs and bodies to give them extra control of the boat.  However a novice may feel that this will restrict their ability to exit the kayak in the event of a capsize.

3)    Storage and Transport.

These boats are not small and can take up quite a lot of space, so you really do need to give some thought to where you are going to store it when it is not in use and also how you are going to get it to and from the water.  Another consideration is whether or not you can manage to launch and recover the kayak easily in your own.  If any of the above are an issue the you have the option of looking at inflatable kayaks, which take little storage space, are easy to transport and are not usually very heavy.

4)    Storage Space and Comfort.

How many paddlers do you need to carry ( you can get one seat or two with many styles) or you can go for a canadian canoe which can carry upto 6 people.  As well as the paddlers you need to be able to carry all the other equipment you may need, such as safety equipment, food, drink etc.  So you need to investigate how much storage capacity you will have on board.

As for comfort, you will want to look for a good quality seat that is fully adjustable.  This along with adjustable foot rests should ensure a pleasant journey.

5)    Initial stability verses Final Stability

By it's very nature a kayak cannot have both excellent initial stability and excellent final stability, so you will need to make a choice according to your level of expertise..  Some boats try and strike a good compromise between good initial stability and good final stability, and these will on the whole be suitable for all but the most experienced paddlers.

It is worth bearing in mind that the stability characteristics will have an effect on a kayaks handling and speed.  A craft with better initial stability, will by design, be wider and slower than a narrow faster boat which has a poorer initial stability but a better final stability.

6)    Maneuverability

You will want to investigate how easily a kayak will track (hold a straight course) and how easy and quickly it will turn.  Again, due to inherent design characteristics your boat will not be excellent at both.  In general a longer narrower boat will track better and a shorter boat will be easier to turn, quicker and will generally be more responsive and maneuverable.

7)    Purchase Price

The final point to remember is your budget, and dont forget that it is not just the kayak you will need.  There are many accessories that you will also need, such as  a paddle, a PFD, maybe some specialist clothing and footwear.  You may need to buy a carrier for your car.  There is a huge variation in the cost of kayaks.  You can pick up a cheap inflatable for less than $100, but can easily pay well over $1000 for a more technically advanced boat.  The good news is that there are many excellent kayaks available between $100 and $1000, so there should be one to suit all budgets.

So do yourself a favour and go through the above points, and give yourself the best chance of making the correct purchase.
