Ideas & Things To Do For A Weekend In The UK

You haven't got long, only a weekend in which to do something memorable and you're in the UK - what can you do? Of course there are thousands of things that you can do, National Parks to visit, hundreds of historical sites, places of culture and tourism to visit, shops in which to get your retail fix. The truth is of course you need more than a weekend to see what England and the UK has to offer, but here a just a few things you could do...

Stone Henge
It's world famous, yet no one really knows what it is all about. A fantastic place to visit and to try and comprehend the mysteries behind it. What is it really? A temple for those worshipping the sun? A place for healing or burial? Some have even though that it may have been a huge calendar, and of course the recent discovery of a second Stone Henge a couple of miles away has only added to the intrigue. For those of you who think you may know what it is, move on to the conundrum of how did they get the stones there?!

Located in Wiltshire, just north of Salisbury, you can get see this incredible monument through the English Heritage organisation and it's quite inexpensive too. So get your camera ready for some incredible shots, especially if you can get there for sundown or sunrise. Just try not to think of the scene in Spinal Tap and the Stone Henge prop; it kind of takes the gloss of it...!

Windsor and Windsor Castle
Windsor, or Royal Windsor, is a great destination to soak up 1000yrs of history, heritage and culture, and even Lego.

The main attraction is of course Windsor Castle, the oldest still occupied castle in the world (by The Queen of course...!) and is full or treasures and awe inspiring sights. Set in 13 acres, you can take part in a tour of this incredible castle and see a real working palace and maybe even catch the changing of the guard.

To continue with the historical them, you can of course also visit the world famous Eton College and take in the incredible buildings. Enjoy a guided tour of the school (founded in 1440) that has produced and taught 18 former British Prime Ministers and of course members of the Royal Family.

If you want to get outside then perhaps it's time to take a trip to The Savill Garden, a truly stunning ornamental garden. Created in the 1930's by Sir Eric Savill, you'll find gardens within gardens, exotic woodland and many native and exotic species of plant and flower. Another one for your camera!

Of course if the kids are starting to feel hard done by because of all the history and culture, you have Legoland down the road...!

The Roman Baths
Located in Bath itself, the baths are a fantastically preserved Roman site of public bathing. This is living history to be discovered through the baths and the Pump Room. You can witness some of the finest Roman remains in Britain (and also voted as the most romantic) and also enjoy bathing in the naturally warm and mineral rich waters of the Minerva Bath.

The Roman Baths themselves are located beneath the modern street level and has four main features to enjoy, the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman bath house and of course the The Georgian Pump Room.

Take the time out to relax and take part in an historic past time from the forefathers of modern bathing.

The Lake District
One of the most famous and popular places to visit in the UK. A place that offers true beauty and outdoor challenges for all.

Made famous through 19th century poetry, enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountainous ranges and stunning lakes. Formed  through glaciations, the u-shaped valleys offer incredible photo taking opportunities and the chance to enjoy the wildlife and flora & fauna of the region.

Outdoor activities are everywhere in the Lake District, canoe and kayaking, trekking, climbing, the list goes on. However there are also quaint shopping opportunities for when you need a rest!

The real way to do the Lake District is of course in a tent with a trusty pair of walking boots. However there are numerous hotels, cottages of pubs offering accommodation for all. Enjoy an outdoor trek or climb and then a wonderful English pub meal in the evening, with a couple of glasses of ale or wine and sleep better than you have for an age! A wonderful way to have a UK weekend break.

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg for things to do in the UK, but we all have to start somewhere!
