Kayaks: Get the Most Out of Your Recreation Time
For high adventure on roaring rapids, great fishing spots, reaching inaccessible hunting areas, watching bird life in a quiet retreat or just a day out on the water, there is a kayak for every occasion.
It was first built in Greenland, later in Alaska, by the Eskimo. Using driftwood, the only timber available in his world of ice, snow and water, he fashioned a framework in the shape of a little streamlined craft, hardly wider than himself, not much longer than he was tall. Over this he stretched the skins of animals, mainly seals he had hunted for food, sewn together and waterproofed with fat.
Tying the skin covering around his waist so as to be skin-tight, he grasped the short double-ended paddle in both hands, and was equally ready to brave the waves of the open sea, the swift currents of rivers or the quiet waters on inland lakes. With this little boat, he was master of his environment. It kept him alive. He called it "kayak".
Today, this versatile craft is an increasingly popular means of enjoyment. Whether you wish to shoot the roaring rapids of inland rivers, venture out into the heaving waves and swells of open sea, or quietly explore the shores of inland lakes, there will be a kayak that will let you do it just the way you want.
Most kayaks still follow the basic original closed deck design, but as kayaking has grown in popularity through the nineties and into our 21st Century, many varieties of size and material have been developed to meet the increasing demand.
Differing in style and character from a canoe, in which the paddler kneels and uses a single bladed paddle - kayaks are now available in a wide range of categories, classified by their specific purpose. Broadly speaking kayaks are divided into whitewater or sea/ocean kayaking, two very different activities.
Whitewater kayaking would be the thrill of churning rapids in flowing rivers. For this you might choose from, among others, a creek kayak designed specifically for negotiating narrow river courses, twisting through gullies and over falls. For the waves and currents of open sea, or the tranquility of peaceful lakes, there is a widely diverse choice of kayaks ranging from the simple fishing kayak, fitted with features and accessories designed to maximize convenience and enjoyment, to adventuring craft. These latter are custom-built to suit either individualistic explorers alone or with a friend, or larger parties on commercially-based organized tours to destinations of specific interest such as ice-floes or island habitats of particular note.
Between these two extremes, the opportunities for fulfillment or just plain enjoyment are virtually endless. You may be a beginner, splashing about just for the love of it on a sit-on-top; or you're fishing quietly in some still, hidden backwoods corner where no other craft are allowed; or you're out there shooting the rapids, battling offshore currents, or cruising carefully close to house-size icebergs - wherever you go, whatever your range of interests, whatever your level of skill, there's a kayak to suit you, ready and waiting.
Find out about it, see it, try it, but be warned: kayaking is habit-forming and highly infectious.
Here are some ideas about specific kayaks
Clear Blue Hawaii use polycarbonate thermoplastic to build their boats because it is known for its high impact strength. Their two person Hanauma has clear viewing panels, great for viewing underwater aquatic life.
Sea Eagle does a 340X which is built for raging whitewater or open water wilderness. It is also suitable for one or two people and some camping gear.
The Innova Safari, an inflatable kayak is good on whitewater, ocean, surf, placid rivers and lakes. Innova's aim is for their kayaks to be PVC free.
The Dagger Blackwater II can carry two people plus a child and is great for recreational paddling or light overnight trips.
The Jackson Creek Boat Rocker Series comes in three sizes, Punk Rocker, Rocker, and Mega Rocker, built for whitewater comfort, no holes and no leaks, built with Cross-link plastic.
Sevylor currently have a free shipping offer on most of their kayaks. That makes for a big saving.

Kayak $74.88 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A kayak (sometimes generalised as a canoe) is a small humanpowered boat that traditionally has a covered deck, and one or more cockpits, each seating one paddler who strokes a doublebladed paddle. The cockpit is covered by a spraydeck (skirt) that keeps the inside of the boat (and the paddlers lower body) dry. The spraydeck or similar waterproof covering attaches securely to the edges of the cockpit, preventing the entry of water from waves or spray, and making it possible, in some boats, to roll the kayak, capsizing and righting the boat without it filling with water or ejecting the passenger.
