The Natural Side Of Fort Lauderdale
Since Fort Lauderdale sits very close to the Atlantic Ocean, you would be correct in thinking that it is host to some wonderful stretches of sand. These include Fort Lauderdale Beach itself.

Fort Lauderdale also has plenty more to offer to the average visitor. You should be just as eager to spend a day exploring some of the parks and other sights nearby as you are to spend time relaxing on the beach.

So where should you head to first?

One place that should be near the top of your list is Bonnet House. This has been a historic landmark for 25 years, but it isn’t just a house – it has stunning gardens available to view as well.

These gardens are truly one of the best natural sights in all of Fort Lauderdale. This is because there are five ecosystems in play here, all of which you can view for yourself. It isn’t often that you see wetlands and a forest in such close proximity, but you will when you visit Bonnet House.

If you have the kids with you then a trip to the delightfully named Tree Tops Park will be in order too. This boasts hundreds of acres of land and it has something to please virtually everyone.

It’s good for hiking as well, so bring your boots if you love this kind of outing in the open air. The kids will no doubt encourage you to hire a paddle boat for a trip round the marina too. Regardless of whether you like to get around on foot, on a bike or even on horseback, you can do them all in Tree Tops Park. Just be aware that it isn’t open every day of the week.

If Tree Tops Park has you wondering if there are any other similar venues in Fort Lauderdale, you are in luck. The Hugh Taylor Birch State Park plays host to some freshwater lagoons and you can try a spot of canoeing if you have the energy. It is hard not to simply want to sit back and relax with a nice picnic though.

There is a small charge to enter this park but the fees are well worth it and help to keep it looking good. There are trails you can follow and cyclists are also welcome to enter and use the park, so there is plenty to do and see.

At many http://www.hotels.com/city-hotels_fort-lauderdale_1419713.html">Fort Lauderdale hotels you can get a good view of some of these parks and open spaces before you even visit them. There is no doubt that going to each one in person is a great way to spend a relaxing few hours away from the beach.

The Survival of the Bark Canoe $9.99 In Greenville, New Hampshire, a small town in the southern part of the state, Henri Vaillancourt makes birch-bark canoes in the same manner and with the same tools that the Indians used. The Survival of the Bark Canoe is the story of this ancient craft and of a 150-mile trip through the Maine woods in those graceful survivors of a prehistoric technology. It is a book squarely in the tradition of one written by the first tourist in these woods, Henry David Thoreau, whose The Maine Woods recounts similar journeys in similar vessel. As McPhee describes the expedition he made with Vaillancourt, he also traces the evolution of the bark canoe, from its beginnings through the development of the huge canoes used by the fur traders of the Canadian North Woods, where the bark canoe played the key role in opening up the wilderness. He discusses as well the differing types of bark canoes, whose construction varied from tribe to tribe, according to custom and available materials. In a style as pure and as effortless as the waters of Maine and the glide of a canoe, John McPhee has written one of his most fascinating books, one in which his talents as a journalist are on brilliant display. |
