Boat holiday
Club holidays are one of the best vacations you'll ever experience. The flexibility offers a fantastic experience for everyone, young or old, families and singles.
Operators and resorts Different companies tend to focus on a different emphasis, designed for different needs. Among the many resorts on offer there is something to satisfy all needs and tastes, from non-sailing parents with keen children, to expert racers wanting to test their skills in a sunnier climate. Sailing holidays are one of the fastest growing sectors of the travel market. With competition between operators being tough, all strive hard to offer a quality product.
Most resorts are water sport focused with the latest equipment and boats. Others have the emphasis of multiple activities, with sailing and windsurfing being one of a dozen activities all given equal focus. This type of holiday is ideal for families or a couple wanting to try water sports.
All resorts follow the same basic outline with stunning locations, a fun and laid-back atmosphere and knowledgeable staff giving a high standard of service on the water and back on land. Plus, of course, there is plenty of opportunity to make new friends, sample local culture as well as try new fun activities such as water skiing and kite surfing.
Something new? Dinghy racers will appreciate sailing in the sun with warm waters, as well as the opportunity to try different boats such as singlehanders or skiffs. It's also a good way to access moving to a different class before committing yourself to spending several thousand pounds on a new boat. Those who are not interested in such energetic activities, or who just want a break from sports, can relax by the pool or, in some locations, take a trip to the health spa.
Club holidays are a popular way to start sailing or improve your skills. An important change over the last few years is that almost all operators now offer RYA tuition, but not all offer the full range of dingy sailing and windsurfing courses. Also, a number of clubs offer introductory yacht crewing and skippering courses as well as tuition. Some clubs also offer one week in a club, with tuition if required, followed by a week on a flotilla, during which you will cruise on your own boat.
Something for everyone Most companies will offer a range of child care and activities for small children to teenagers, and sometimes this is free. The range of sports and activities on offer means families with the most diverse interests will find plenty to do. At the same time, operators know that some singles and couples don't want to be surrounded by children on holiday. This is why some resorts offer child free zones and adult only weeks, this offers much appeal for couples and groups of friends.
Final thoughts Remember to research your resort carefully. Make sure it satisfies all your wishes. With some companies this mean reading between the lines, but others will be more obvious. When comparing prices, look for what's included in the headline price as this differs greatly and extras can make a big difference to the final cost of your holiday.
